BRING THE RIVAL TO YOUR CAMPUS
DOES YOUR SCHOOL NEED AN AUTHENTIC STUDENT VOICE? DO YOU WANT TO
CHANGE THE WAY YOU AND YOUR PEERS INTERACT WITH CAMPUS NEWS AND
ENTERTAINMENT? LIKE FILLING OUT FORMS?
The Rival began at the George Washington University in spring of 2014. At the time, students felt that their school’s news sources were either outdated, out of touch, or filtered by the institution.
Josh Strupp was a Journalism & Mass Communications Major at the time. In his journalism research, methods, and theory classes, he was taught that journalism is a dying industry and out of touch with the current generation (in our case millennials).
“Journalism isn’t dying – it’s evolving. It’s digital. The content is more diverse, progressive, and creative. Simply, journalism is in a state of flux. All it needs is continued innovation.” – Josh Strupp
That’s our mission: To modernize campus news.
In March of 2014, we started The Rival at GW with a staff of 10, which quickly grew to 50 . In a year, we racked up nearly half a million page views and placed in 4th place in the largest collegiate business plan competition in the nation.
We performed extensive market research during the competition and found the problem to be pervasive; schools all over the country didn’t have a voice like us and advertising dollars were fragmented by campus. After placing in the competition, weeks before graduation, we thought to ourselves “We’re young, dumb, and almost too ambitious. When is a better time to take risks?” Immediately after graduation we began talking to hundreds of students; we basically spoke to anyone who would listen. Eventually, in July of 2015, we started on-boarding new schools.
We launched our beta site on October
27th 28th, 2015. With our 9 pioneering schools, we have a staff of over 220 student Writers, Editors, Directors, and Strategists and this is only just the beginning.
